1. Who can use the Service

You must be at least 18 years old. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you confirm you are authorized to accept these terms for it.

2. Your account

You sign in with your email address. Keep access to that email secure; anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us at support@thebestbosseffect.com if you think someone else has used it. You can delete your account at any time from your Profile; see section 11 for what that removes.

3. The assessment and your report

The Best Boss Leadership Assessment™ and the reports built from it describe self-reported leadership tendencies based on the framework in The Best Boss Effect. They are educational tools for your own development. They are not psychological, medical, legal, employment, or professional advice, and they do not rank you against other people or measure how good a leader you are. Decisions about hiring, promotion, discipline, or any other employment matter should never be based on them, and we do not provide results to employers in any form that identifies an individual, except as you choose to share.

4. Free use, Full Access, and what you keep

Parts of the Service are free: the assessment, your leadership profile, general practices, Insights, and the podcast. Full Access adds the complete report, the book's practices, the journal, development cycles, reflection reviews, reading notes, and PDF download; Plus adds further features described in the app.

Full Access can come from a paid subscription, a verified book purchase, a workshop or organization access code, a coach's seat, a student plan, or a complimentary grant from us. When it ends, you keep the full report and PDF for any assessment you completed while you had Full Access, and read-only access to what you wrote. Ongoing features stop until you subscribe again.

5. Subscriptions, payment, and cancellation

Prices are shown in the app in US dollars and may include sales tax where required. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period, monthly or annual, until you cancel. Cancel at any time from your Profile; cancellation stops the next charge and you keep access to the end of the period you have paid for. We may change prices for new subscriptions; the price you pay is locked for as long as your subscription stays active, except for the published step-down to the alumni rate when a student plan ends and the move to or from the alumni rate when a coaching connection starts or ends, each applied at your next renewal with 30 days' notice.

Refunds: within 14 days of any charge, on request to support@thebestbosseffect.com, no questions asked. After 14 days, charges are not refundable except where the law requires.

Payments are processed by Stripe; we do not store your card details.

6. Book purchase year, codes, and student plans

A year of Full Access with the book requires an approved receipt or order confirmation for The Best Boss Effect: one receipt, one year, one account. For receipts approved before the book's release date of June 27, 2027, access begins on approval and the year runs from the release date; for receipts approved afterward, the year runs from approval. We may decline a receipt we cannot verify or that has been used. Access codes from workshops, organizations, bulk book purchases, or coaches grant the access stated when issued and may not be sold or transferred. Student plans require current enrollment, verified as described in the app, for up to two years, after which the alumni rate applies.

You may redeem a book's year for someone else by giving their email address with the receipt; the year goes to that person's account, not yours, and the receipt is still used once. A gift order confirmation that names the recipient may be uploaded by the recipient as their own proof. We review any gift we cannot match to its recipient.

Referrals: each account has a personal referral link. A person who creates their account through your link (or receives a book you gave) is recorded as referred by you, and this cannot be changed later. When that person first becomes a paying member, through a subscription, an approved book receipt, or a workshop code, you earn one free month: a credit of one month's price on your next invoice if you subscribe, otherwise a month of Full Access. Complimentary access and access paid by a coach do not count. You can earn up to five free months in any twelve months. If you cannot use a month (for example, you have lifetime access or the alumni rate), it goes to the person you referred. A person who joins through a referral and has their book receipt approved gets one extra month on top of their book year. Free months have no cash value and cannot be transferred. We may withhold or remove credits earned by self-referral, duplicate accounts, or other misuse, and may change or end the referral program for months not yet earned.

7. Coaches, facilitators, and organizations

Independence. Coaches and facilitators on this platform are independent. The Best Boss Effect does not employ them, verify their qualifications, or review their advice. Any coaching arrangement, including fees, is made directly between you and the coach, outside this platform. We do not process coaching fees and we do not mediate disputes between you and a coach.

Connecting and sharing. A coach or facilitator sees your pages only after you give consent in the app, and only the pages you choose. You can narrow or end sharing at any time from your Profile, and access ends immediately. Notes a coach leaves on your pages remain with you.

The badge. "Trained in the Best Boss method" means a coach has read the book, completed our orientation, and accepted our coach agreement. It is not an assessment of coaching qualifications, experience, or results.

Directory listings. Listings are written by the coaches themselves; credentials are self-reported. We may remove a listing at our discretion. You can report a listing from the coach's card.

Organizations. An organization that runs a workshop or holds a dashboard sees group results only, never fewer than five people, and never your individual results or journal unless you choose to share them.

Coach plans. Coaches subscribe under the plans described in the app, with a free trial, and accept a separate coach agreement at signup. Where these terms and the coach agreement differ for a coach, the coach agreement controls.

8. Your content

You own what you write in the Service: journal entries, reflections, notes, cycle answers, and your profile. You give us a license to store, display, and process it to provide the Service to you and to anyone you choose to share it with, and to produce features you turn on, such as reflection reviews. We do not sell your content, use it in marketing, or train AI models on it.

Assessment responses and results are also used, in anonymized and aggregated form, in the research benchmark that powers comparisons and in our ongoing research on leadership. Nothing in that use identifies you.

9. Our content

The Best Boss Effect, the framework, the assessment, the reports, the practices, the Best Boss Leadership Assessment™ mark, and all text, design, and software in the Service belong to us and our licensors and are protected by copyright and trademark law. We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use them within the Service for your own development, or, if you are a coach, to work with your clients inside the Service under the coach agreement. You may not copy, redistribute, sell, scrape, or build a product on them, and you may not use the materials outside the Service.

10. AI features

Some features use an AI model from a third-party provider in the United States: reading receipts and student documents you upload, writing 90-day reflection reviews from your journal if you opt in, and, where available, Ask the book, which answers questions by summarizing the book and pointing to the chapter. Nothing you send to these features is used to train any model, by us or by the provider. Reflection reviews and Ask the book draw on the book's framework and your own writing; they are not advice, and they can be wrong. Use your judgment, and talk to a person for anything that matters.

11. Deleting your account

Deleting your account removes your profile, journal, cycles, reviews, and coach connections. Your assessment responses remain in the anonymized research data with nothing that identifies you. Deletion is permanent.

12. Acceptable use

Don't use the Service to break the law, to harass anyone, to access another person's account or data, to probe or disrupt our systems, to scrape content, or to misrepresent yourself. Coaches must follow the coach agreement. We may suspend or end an account that breaks these terms.

13. Changes to the Service and these terms

We improve the Service continually and may add, change, or remove features. We may update these terms; if a change materially affects your rights, we will tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that date means you accept the change.

14. Disclaimers

The Service is provided as is. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that the assessment will predict anything, or that following the book's practices will produce any particular result. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied.

15. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of the Service, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, in which case they apply only as far as permitted. We are not liable for the acts, advice, or omissions of any coach, facilitator, or organization you connect with through the Service.

16. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from your breach of these terms or your misuse of the Service. Coaches additionally agree to indemnify us against claims arising from their coaching services.

17. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas. Before bringing a claim, you agree to contact us at support@thebestbosseffect.com and try to resolve it informally for 30 days. Any claim will be brought in the state or federal courts in Denton County, Texas, and you consent to their jurisdiction.
